Herbal Hair Oil: Supporting Herbs For Hair Growth

I want to share a bit of a personal journey with you—something that has been a significant part of my life recently. Over the past year, I’ve been experiencing noticeable hair loss. It’s been quite a journey. But, I’m excited to share a DIY herbal oil remedy that I’m optimistic will help me with regrowth.

Let me rewind a bit and give you some context. Dealing with hair loss has been a challenging experience for me, especially since I’m not one for high-maintenance routines. I prefer simplicity, a quick shower, minimal makeup, and out the door. However, my hair loss reached a point where it became hard to ignore. Everywhere I looked on my head, my scalp was visible, requiring elaborate styling tricks to conceal the severity.

I consulted with my hairdresser, wore hats, explored different solutions, from silk pillowcases to various products, and even considered wearing a wig or topper. However, these were temporary fixes, and the underlying issue persisted. It took me a while to connect the dots, but a significant health shock, likely due to COVID and other long-term high-risk medications from my autoimmune disease, had impacted my system, contributing to the hair loss.

Determined to find a natural remedy, I dove into herbal books and communities. After thorough research, I settled on a blend of three herbs: Rosemary, Lavender, and Nettle. Here’s why:

  1. Rosemary: Is long known for stimulating hair growth, but be careful with this herb if you have dry brittle hair, due to its drying energetics.

  2. Nettle: Aids in reducing fallout by soothing the scalp and providing anti-inflammatory properties.

  3. Lavender: Plumps up hair strands, making hair appear thicker, and offers soothing benefits for the scalp.

I decided to create an herbal oil using these three ingredients, combined with olive oil. I created a dried herb mix of 1 part Rosemary, 2 parts Nettle, and 2 parts Lavender, then topped it off with olive oil. Now, using olive oil might give a weighted-down look in the daytime, but for nighttime application, it works well for me. My plan is to let the infusion sit on my cool dark apothecary shelf for four weeks, giving it a daily shake, before straining and applying it to my scalp in the evening. It’s a slow infusion method, my preferred way to extract the maximum herbal properties.

For those who prefer not to use oil, an alternative is to make a strong herbal infusion and use it as a hair rinse. This can enhance the shine and fullness of your hair, offering similar benefits without the oiliness.

As I embark on this herbal journey, I’m excited to see the positive results. Over the course of this year I’ve had hair regrowth many times, but then it would all fall out again, or break. My recent visit to the hairdresser revealed significant regrowth, and I’m excited to continue this natural approach to maintain progress.

If you’re dealing with hair loss, I encourage you to explore herbal remedies, keeping in mind the underlying causes. Different situations may require different herbs, so don’t hesitate to adjust your recipe as needed.

I’d love to hear from you! Tell me your experiences and herbal recipes for hair oil.
